Coaches Training Format: Players will be trained as an age
group in a camp type format. There will be no designated
teams and no traditional parent/coaches. The topic of each session
will be developed by a professional Head Coach and implemented by the Head Coach
and his/her staff. Players will be placed in groups of 8-12 with one staff coach
per group. These groups will change with each training session. The Head Coach
and staff will be selected and trained by the Director of Coaching. Game Day Format: Each age group
will all come together on Saturdays for
staggered 1 hour time blocks of games. Players will be randomly placed in
groups of 12. One staff coach and any volunteer parent(s) will organize and
supervise that group of 12 into 2 games of 3v3 on two 20x30 yd fields. Each
group will play two 8 minute periods, no time outs or substitutions, with a 2
minute break in between. At the end of two periods the players will break for 10
minutes during which time they will be reorganized into different groups and be
sent back out to play two more 8 minute periods. In the event of odd numbers of
players in a group, “teams” may have an extra player which could result in games
of 3v4 or even 4v4. This is not a major issue as these games really come down to
1v? Once the game begins the players have no idea how many are on each “team”.
It will be the parents who perceive this to be “unfair” and it is imperative
that the head coach and staff dispel any initial controversy with the above
facts. U 10-
Mike Smith- Head Coach We will continue
to use the traditional team format in this age group. Players will be placed
on teams with emphasis given to equality in overall strength and diversity. The
head coach shall have input on the strength and ability of any players new to
the group. The team coaches will supply information on the strength and ability
of existing players
within the age group. Our game format for U-10's will essentially
remain the same. At this age, players are ready to begin learning about
simple tactical concepts. Their ability to perceive such concepts however is
still nominal. Therefore it is important to keep the numbers smaller on the
field (7v7 plus keeper). Games should played with a minimum amount of influence
by the coach. It is important that players are given the opportunity and
responsibility to make decisions/mistakes on their own. The coaches job on game
day is one of organization and giving players tactical direction before the game
and at half time. It is imperative that winning is de-emphasized and quality of
play and enjoyment be the focus of the day. U13- Chris Faust,
Head Coach
At these ages, roster sizes and #’s
on the field will be increased to 9v9. Players are now exposed
to higher levels of training and those interested are offered additional
‘intermediate’ training in preparation for joining competitive play. This
training is held weekly during the regular season and is in addition to their
regular team training. It is organized and implemented by the Director of
Coaching. Training
Format: Personal/small
group balls skills and tactics are emphasized at this age. Training sessions
will increase to 3/week with a maximum of one session in 3 and a minimum of one
session in 5 being implemented by the Director of Coaching.
Game
Format: Regular
weekly developmental games are held during the season in addition to any
scheduled ‘pickup’ games for the intermediate players. Intermediates may also have the opportunity
to play in tournaments organized for that level of play. The field will be
shortened with goals placed where the "penalty area" line would be on a normal
size field.

U-8 Mike Smith & Aaron Mello- Head
Coaches
This will be our second season using our new training format. The new
format was very well received by a majority of players and parents and is much
more varied than their older counterparts. This approach is considerably
modified from the traditional methodologies used. It is based on evidence
that players of these ages generally do not have the “need” for the traditional
team concepts. U-6 and U-8 players are most interested in the ball and
just playing. Their games are not 3v3 or 4v4, rather 1v5 or 1v7. It is most
important that they get proper exposure to technical training by a qualified
staff of coaches as opposed to the traditional methods of 1 parent coach/team.
Furthermore, game day format will allow players the opportunity to play
with/against many combinations of players and personalities, allowing and
encouraging the concepts of sportsmanship, love of the game, respect for
others.
Training Format: At this age it is
imperative that personal ball skills be heavily emphasized. Therefore, it is
suggested that in addition to their individual team training, that players
receive specific skills training by either the Head Coach or the Director of
Coaching. The skills sessions may be included as part of the regular training or
as supplemental training with each team or en masse as a “skills” clinic. These
skills sessions are needed a minimum of 4 times/season and a maximum of one per
week.
After a
minimum of one season of intermediate training/play, players are given an
opportunity to tryout for a competitive team, which will play in the CYS league.
Roster sizes are limited to approximately 16 players as to maximize game
time.
