Best Mile Eaters
If endurance riding appeals to you, join the Iron Butt Association,
6326 W. Grace St.; Chicago, IL 60634, and keep riding. Following are
the IBA's top 10 mileage mongers:
1. Dava McQuseney
He has applied for his 500,000-mile award from BMW. McQueeney started riding
18 years ago when his "car died just down the block from a motorcycle
dealership." On his K100, McQueeney was the IBA's mileage winner in 1990
with 69,954 miles and in '89 with 77,193.
2. Michael KneeboneHe set the New York to San Francisco motorcycle record
in May of 19$8 (since broken) and shares the 48-state record (visiting
all 48 contiguous states with documentation) of 6 days, 13 hours and
12 minutes.' In 1988 he was the IBA's top mileage junkie with 80,346
miles: Kneebone currently has 910,000 lifetime miles and rising:
3. David Mishalof
The K100RS rider consistently places in the top three of the IBA and BMW Motorcycle
Owners of America mileage contests and has 380;000 mites in only eight years
of riding.
4. Robert Higdon
When Wigdon isn't working as an attorney representing the AMA in Washington,
he's on his K100LT winning mileage contests.
5. Fran CraneShe's won the BMWMOA woman’s mileage contest three
time and held the New York to San Francisco record until Ken Hatton broke
it. Crane shares the 48-state record with Kneebone, teaches at Reg Pridmore's
CLASS and will run the ’91 Iron Butt.
6. Ross CopasA native of Cornwall in Ontario, Canada, Ross rides at
least 30,000 miles each year on his 1985 BMW R100RT. His tough Canadian
determination helped him win the ’86 Iron Butt Rally, and he has
also won the Nevada 1100.
7. Gregg Smith
The Rhode Island resident ignores ice and snow to ride 50,000 miles a year,
and as you read this is probably turning over 200,000 miles on his current
Venture Royale.
8. Ardys Kellerman
Ms. Kellerman currently holds the BMWMOA women's mileage record of 51,534 miles
in six months, set in 1990.
9. Dal Smilie
A two-time BMWMOA high-mileage winner, Dal Smilie owns a K100RS with over 200,000
on the clock. `
10. Jan Cutler
He's the sick mind behind the Nevada 1100 rally and the chairman of the 1991
Iron Butt; he rides all the time.
HONORABLE MENTION: Mack Dambrowki
He rides the cleanest, ' trickest Concours anyone's ever seen, complete
with police scanner, 290 watts of
extra lighting and 15 gallons of total fuel capacity. Dambrowski has run four
Nevada 1.100s and is entered in
the '91 Iron Butt.
INTERESTING NOTE: Of the IBA top 10, only Kneebone and Copas are under 40 years
old, Kellerman and Higdon are over 50, and Cutler acts about 18.
