The name Big Horn is believed to have been derived from the Bighorn sheep who made their home in the area of the mountainous range which became known as the Big Horn Mountains.
The area around the mountains became known as the Big Horn Basin of Wyoming and forms an irregular circle or oval with Powell, Garland, Byron, Deaver, Frannie, and Cowley on the north. Lovell, Emblem, Burlington, Otto, Basin, Manderson, Greybull, and Worland border on the east, Cody and Meeteetse on the west, and Thermopolis on the south.
Surrounding the basin are the Big Horn Mountains, the Beartooth Mountains, Carter Mountain, the Bridge and Owl Creek Mountains, some of the Wind River Mountains, and it takes in parts of Park, Big Horn, Washakie, and Hot Springs counties. The Big Horn Basin is rich in Wyoming history.
Wyoming was admitted as the 44th State of the United States on July 10, 1890. In November 1869, women were granted the right to vote and hold office. Thus, Wyoming was the first territory in the world to consider women politically equal to men. Esther Hobart Morris was the first female Justice of the Peace, and Nellie Tayloe Ross was elected as the first woman governor of Wyoming on November 4, 1924. |
